The Bottom Line:
I recommend this toaster to large families and anyone who makes a lot of toast, but you will need adequate counter space.
I never realized how hard it is to find a good toaster! In my quest for the perfect piece of toast, I bought a Krups toaster oven. I paid way too much, and I was VERY disappointed.
I bought the Hamilton Beach 24648 toaster at Costco for $25. I am consistently pleased with its performance. I know, it's just a toaster, but breakfast is a breeze when the toaster does its job! You can toast up to 4 slices at a time. The levers that lower the slices have a retro look, and they are very easy to push down. There is a special setting for bagels that requires just the push of the cool blue BAGEL button. The darkness is controlled by a rotary dial with numbers from 1 to 6. There are controls for each pair of slots. If you want to stop toasting, you just push the cool blue CANCEL button, and the lever pops back up.
The exterior of this toaster stays cool during operation, and the toast pops up to a generous height to prevent burning fingertips. Everyone in my household has used this toaster, including my 7-year-old, and no one has been burned.
I really like the looks of this toaster, even though it has a fairly large footprint. It combines a touch of retro with cool modern details. It doesn't take up any more space than my toaster oven.
This toaster browns the toast perfectly. For breakfast toast, I set the dial to 3. For club sandwiches, I turn the dial down to 1.5. For low sugar breads, 4 is a good setting. Frozen bread comes out beautifully when toasted on 5. Bagels are toasted on one side only if the BAGEL button is pressed. This turns out a very nice bagel!
This toaster is also quite durable. The movable parts move easily, and are not at all flimsy. Cleaning the toaster is a snap, with the removable crumb tray. The crumbs are stored well below the heating elements, which prevents the smell often brought on by burned toast crumbs.
You really can't go wrong with this toaster!
