The Bottom Line:
This is a cheap, plain toaster that functions fairly without any special features.
Throughout my married life I've had many toasters both 2-slice and 4-slice as the family size changed. Some we owned worked fine but none of them ever worked perfect. You know what I mean, toast that is equally toasted on both sides like you get at restaurants.
My husband had purchased an expensive modern toaster online that didn't work right. Luckily, we were able to return it to the store so we didn't have to ship it back. He thought that because it was expensive it would work much better than others we've had. I continued to use my old 4-slice toaster until I purchased this 2-slice one. I would never spend more than $50 for a toaster. I take chances with cheaper products sometimes but he would only purchase top of the line products.
Since I'm now alone in the house, I thought it was time to replace my 4-slice toaster since it wasn't toasting evenly and I also wanted to free up some counter space so decided to look for a 2-slice toaster. I purchased this Hamilton Beach/Proctor-Sylex toaster in a grocery store about 2 years ago. It cost me under $15 so I was not expecting much. I was surprised that this toaster is still available. This is a cheap no frills toaster.
Model 22608
This model is a 120v, 780W, with wide slots for all types of thickness of whatever I want to toast from regular American bread, bagel, etc. I have toasted sliced Italian bread that was a day old just to make it crispy.
This is a curved stainless toaster with black plastic sides. This did match my appliances at the time I purchased it. I have noticed this same style in white but not at the time I purchased mine.
The control to the side of the toaster has no numbers but 5 indented dots around the turning knob to adjust from light to dark. I have burned my bread many times because I did not check the darkness setting which moves very easily if I clean that area. The setting does not click at each one but moves too easily around. I must check to see the the dial is on the 12:00 (upward) before pressing down since that setting seems to work the best for me.
The 3-foot electrical cord comes out from the bottom and so the toaster can be placed at any angle to fit your counter space which is great for those with limited counter tops.
Above the setting control is the lever that when pressed down the brackets inside the toaster will hold your bread or bagel in towards the center. This is because of the wide slots it will bring the bread close evenly rather than leaning to the sides. There is no way of cancelling the toasting process. I just have to force the lever up which will make anything being toasted to go flying up. I always keep my plate near the toaster since the toast will be hot. But if the bread I'm toasting is stuck in the toaster, I then unplug it before attempting to loosen it out with a knife.
The crumb tray is at the bottom and does not come off. I just move the knob to release the latch to open, I shake the crumbs in the sink and close it back up. This is an easy process.
OVERALL
Why spend a lot of money for a toaster just to toast bread? Well if you have a large family and many people are using the toaster, you will want one with more features than this has. I doubt there is any toaster out there that toasts bread perfectly even. The elements inside are swirled around a cardboard. If the wire is tightly wound on the cardboard it will toast more evenly. If it is loose in certain parts, it will toast darker in those areas.
So, my advice is to check the toaster's elements before purchasing any toaster. I also recommend this toaster to those that use this product once or twice a week. It is sturdy, will toast your bread fairly, not perfect like restaurants, and most important it's relatively cheap. Cheap sometimes is good and expensive does not guarantee a superior quality product.
AVERAGE
I rated this toaster "Average" since that's what it is; works average, wide slots and does not take up much space on the counter with a low price. I've had it a few years and it is satisfactory for my needs.
