A simple, reliable toaster with no extraneous bells and whistles.

Pros Works well, wide slots, toasts evenly, five darkness settings, doesn't take a lot of space
Cons Very simple, fingerprint magnet, darkness dial sometimes shifts
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  The Hamilton Beach/Proctor Silex 22608 2-Slice Toaster is a simple toaster with wide slots that works consistency well. For the low price, it's just fine for light to medium use.
My son shares a house with a couple of roommates and, a year or so ago, asked me for a cheap toaster. He doesn't eat toast or bagels often but he did want a toaster in case. When I saw the Hamilton Beach 22608 2-Slice Toaster for about $15.00, I picked two up. I always end up buying one or someone else and one for me. I had a large four slice toaster but it was unreliable and a space hog. I figured, for the price, this toaster would suffice.

It's a decent toaster. No bells or whistles and no frills but it works consistently for both me and my son.

About the Hamilton Beach /Proctor Silex Toaster 22608

This toaster is a very simple two slice one with wide slots for bagels and thick bread. I like bagels so thick slots are must haves for me.

It is chrome with black ends and a black dial/push down spring. I didn't see any other colors at the time I bought these toasters a year or so ago.

The cord wraps under the unit so that it is out of the way when not in use. It is attached to the bottom of the unit and is short - no more than three feet long. I prefer longer cords but I know most appliances come with the very short ones.

The crumb collector cannot be removed but can be opened and emptied. It is hinged and very easy to quickly open and dispose of crumbs.

There are five darkness settings and I leave mine on what I think is medium. The reason I say this is because there are no numbers, just little markers. I put the dial in the middle and leave it there more of the time. To use, I simply insert the bread or bagel, push down the black lever, and wait for the toaster to pop up.

If I feel I want to stop the toasting process, I have to just pop up the bread which results in flying bread but it isn't a huge issue for me.  I actually haven't had any issues with the Hamilton Beach/Proctor Silex 22608 2-Slice Toaster. It seems to toast evenly and I rarely burn anything.

It's as simple as a toaster can get but I certainly don't need more nor does my son. He says his is working fine and he's content with it although he has complained that the darkness dial moves and he burns toast. I haven't had that issue often. Every so often, I will see that the dial has changed from what I usually have it on to way to the left or to the right and I readjust. I wish it would lock in but doesn't so I can see how the knob could easily move around if it is touched.

The Hamilton Beach 22608 2-Slice Toaster doesn't get too hot on the outside and doesn't burn my fingers when I touch it. It seems to toast bread, English muffins, and bagels uniformly on both sides just about every time I use it.

While this little toaster isn't a high end model by any means, it does get the job done. Since we rarely toast anything in our house, I have found no reason to upgrade at this point. I may, in time, go back to a four slice, more advanced toaster but right now, this simple toaster works just fine for my limited use.

One thing I don't like is that it is constantly getting fingerprints on it. That is the nature of chrome, I know, but argh. I wish I had found it in white or any other color but chrome just so I wouldn't have to see all the smudges on the thing.

Buying Info

I found the Hamilton Beach/Proctor Silex 22608 2-Slice Toaster at an outlet store named Ollie's near my home. They have a lot of older models of things and discontinued things. I did a quick search online and saw that this model is still being sold for around $15.00-$19.00. I paid $14.99 each for the two I purchased.

Conclusion

The Hamilton Beach 22608 2-Slice Toaster is a very basic toaster that has wide slots for thicker breads and that works fine for me and my son. It's very simplistic but it toasts uniformly. I have had no real issues with keeping the darkness level where I want it but my son says he has to check the toaster each time to be sure it is set right and that the dial moves all the time. I think that is because people are moving the toaster around on the small countertop and perhaps causing the dial to slide.

Although the crumb tray doesn't come off, it is easy to get rid of crumbs by sliding the lever and opening the tray. I have had this toaster for at least a year or more and really have had no issues with it. Although it's a bottom of the line toaster, it works fine for light use. I give it 4 stars for what it is. A very simple, inexpensive toaster.
