Excellent heater

bypsalmx Feb 14, 2007
Pros ALOT of heat and quality construction
Cons slight smell at startup, high fuel prices.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Excellent heater for backup or supplemental heat. With fuel prices and availability maybe to pricey for primary heat.
My family lives in the country so we have a propane furnace. That is until a good snow storm last month when we ran out of propane and our nice propane company wouldn't come out to refill until 4 days later. With a 3 year old and a newborn 4 days wouldn't cut it. I grew up on the east coast with my family using kerosene heaters of my brands over the years so I figured I try one. Headed over to a local farm supply store and picked up the last one for around 130 after being on clearance. Here's the specs NOTE: This unit is manufactured by SENGOKU under the KEROHEAT brand.
BTU Output/Hr 23,000
Estimated Heated Area (sq .ft.) 1000
Automatic Ignition YES
Fuel Capacity (gallons) 1.9
Fuel Gauge YES
Heating Hours per Filling 10 - 12
Automatic Shut off YES
Unit Size (in.) 18? round x 27 high
Net Weight (lbs.) 28

Well with outside temperatures of 2 degrees i kept our down stairs a comfy 75 degrees. Like nearly all kerosene heaters there is a slight smell at startup and shutdown but quick;y dissipates in our old home. The construction of the unit seems to be on par with other models I've seen. The biggest downfall I see is the tank only lasts around 10ish hours on almost 2 gallons of kerosene. Kerosene around northwest missouri is currently $3.50/gallon. So to heat most of the day is 7 dollars. Propane is currently $1.68/gallon but who knows how long a furnace would run on just a gallon. So 50 bucks in kerosene later and we survived without freezing. Hmm maybe heating with kerosene is cheaper than propane?
