A great little car, but not a real sedan

Pros Refined engine, room, boot, A/C, gearshift
Cons No sense of power or urgency from engine, hard suspension
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Great commuter car, good in city traffic, but built to proce, not a real sedan
I have driven the Yaris around for 3 months and found it to be a great little car wth all the typical Toyota traits: lots of car for a little money, great fuel efficiency, clean build and design and no quality problems. But here in the Middle East, the Yaris has replaced the Echo, which was a good starters car. So it isn't really a enthusiasts car.

Power is good for a 1.5L engine (official figures of 107 BHP and 14.4 KgM of torque), but the problem is that you can't really feel it. The gear ratios are low initially, so the car revs to it's redline quickly. But 1st gear is pretty short and 2nd redundant when the engine is revved hard. The torque kicks in early, but is almost absent at the top end. On slopes, I need to shift down to fourth to keep climbing while entering at about 4000 rpm. There lies the problem. YOu put your foot down and it leaps forward at lower gears, but past 3rd, nothing happens. You expect a surge of power but nothing comes. The other car I own and drive, a Swift, if much peppier and feelsmore assured athigher speeds. You aint winning any redlight races in this car.

The biggest problem is the heavy, edgy clutch. You dont expect it in a commuter car, and lots of my friends have had the same problem. A little release, car doesnt move, too much, and it stalls. You never quite get used to the clutch action in this car, though it does give you a good calf workout.

The Yaris has a quick steering, but no speed sensitive adjustment,so although really agile in the parking lot and in traffic, on the highway it feels like you are holding a squirrel's tail, it's that jumpy and nervous. The car also tends to dive if you brake hard into a turn.

Suspension is pretty hard, so a fair bit of bumps soak through. The seats are comfy, the fabric durable and the steering readily falls to hand and is of perfect size. The gearshift is snappy and quick. Brakes work well with no real fade even on hard braking. Good instrument console, great standard stereo but no CD changer, A/C works really well in hot Middle East weather. Both legroom and headroom are ample in the front and rear and the boot will swallow a day's shopping or two large size suitcases.

Overall, a good Mom's car to take the kids to school.
