Good Little Car

Pros Looks, handles well, fun to drive, nice interior, decent mpg.
Cons Low resale value.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Good value for the money.
I test drove a 5-speed Accent the other day, and it fulfilled what certain reviews said about it: good acceleration, good handling and a smooth and quiet ride. I took it on all types of roads, and it was great on all of them. The trans shifted smoothly and it didn't behave at all like a low-budget car. I found it cute--cuter than a Toyota Echo by a longshot, roomy and comfortable. Needless to say, I was very impressed.

I think some people are too harsh in their critiques of the Accent, which by the way, contradict many owner reviews that say it has no trouble keeping up, even on mountain switchbacks, and has been very reliable. Also, many say "check out a Honda or Toyota". Well, here's what I have to say to that: first of all, the Toyota Echo is one of the most hideous vehicles I've ever seen. Second, Civics and Corollas are no longer economy cars, so stop pretending that they are. Even used with 50,000 miles on them, they can cost more than a new Hyundai that, mind you, has the best warranty around. (An independent UK study (a country with many small cars) praises the Accent for its low cost to own, maintain and for time in the garage).

For those on a tight budget, the Accent is a cute, fun little car to drive, period. Stop trying to compare apples to oranges and let it be what it is: an attainable, worthwhile goal for those who need to drive a low-cost, no-worries car. And, to remind you, the kings-of-the-hill Japanese cars are not infallible, and things can and do go wrong (i.e. my cousin has a used Civic and the trans went on her...and the warranty didn't cover it. I had a used 1993 Tercel and it started burning oil and the engine had to be rebuilt to pass inspection, and I had to go deeper into debt to fix it).

Not everyone has the ability to be so fussy and choosy either (like the car reviewers in their ivory towers, you think they're worried about a tight budget?), and really, for an A to B car, it rocks! Also, I love these people who say for "a little bit more"...hey that little bit--and we're talking thousands, not hundreds--is more than people like me can afford.
