The first American Olympics, held in 1904 in St. Louis, were a vigorous spectacle suited to an energetic and confident nation. The games were wrested away from rival city Chicago and appended to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition World's Fair. Athletes came from eleven countries and four continents to compete in state-of-the-art facilities, which included a 10,000-seat stadium with gymnasium equipment donated by sporting goods magnate Albert Spalding. St. Louis Olympics, 1904 corrects common misperceptions and presents a fresh view of the games that featured first-time African American Olympians, an eccentric marathon, and documentation by pioneering photojournalist Jessie Tarbox Beals.

For seven months in 1904, St. Louis was the greatest city on earth. Millions flocked to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition to behold the inventions of the early 20th century. Many saw electric lights, automobiles, aircraft, and moving pictures for the first time. At a time when few traveled more than a couple miles from home, visitors encountered the people and cultures of faraway lands. It was an educational experience, a “university of mankind.” The Pike offered amusement rides, wild animal displays, and fanciful trips through the Hereafter and Creation exhibits. Fairgoers visited the Alps, the North Pole, Russia, and Paris and witnessed famous battles. Everyone wanted to ride the great Observation Wheel. There were hootchy-kootchy dancers and wonderful new foods, such as the ice-cream... Less

The 1904 St. Louis World's Fair was a major event in early-twentieth- century America. Attracting millions of tourists, it exemplified the Victorian predilection for public spectacle. The Fair has long served as a touchstone for historians interested in American culture prior to World War I and has endured in the memories of generations of St. Louis residents and visitors. In Whose Fair? James Gilbert asks: what can we learn about the lived experience of fairgoers when we compare historical accounts, individual and collective memories, and artifacts from the event? Exploring these differing, at times competing, versions of history and memory prompts Gilbert to dig through a rich trove of archival material. He examines the papers of David Francis, the Fair's president and subsequent chief... Less

One of the more problematic sport spectacles in American history took place at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, which included the third modern Olympic Games. Associated with the Games was a curious event known as Anthropology Days organized by William J. McGee and James Sullivan, at that time the leading figures in American anthropology and sports, respectively. McGee recruited Natives who were participating in the fair's ethnic displays to compete in sports events, with the scientific goal of measuring the physical prowess of savages as compared with civilized men. This interdisciplinary collection of essays assesses the ideas about race, imperialism, and Western civilization manifested in the 1904 World's Fair and Olympic Games and shows how they are still relevant.A turning point... World’s fairs and industrial expositions constituted a phenomenally successful popular culture movement during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In addition to the newest technological innovations, each exposition showcased commercial and cultural exhibits, entertainment concessions, national and corporate displays of wealth, and indigenous peoples from the colonial empires of the host country. As scientists claiming specialized knowledge about indigenous peoples, especially American Indians, anthropologists used expositions to promote their quest for professional status and authority. Anthropology Goes to the Fair takes readers through the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition to see how anthropology, as conceptualized by W J McGee, the first president of the American Anthropological... As Midnight struck on Dec. 1, 1904, World's Fair President David R. Francis stood before a hushed crowd of 100,000 in Forest Park in St. Louis. He then threw a switch that extinguished forever the fair that had been a magical kingdom for several months. And yet... from a department store in Philadelphia to a hilltop in Birmingham, from a front yard in Moberly, Missouri, to a museum in Alaska-and in dozens of other places-the World's Fair still lives on. In Still Shining!, Diane Rademacher tracks down the present history and location of the 1904 World's Fair most beloved buildings and structures. Rademacher's book contains original pictures of famous structures and how they look today.

Since its introduction at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, iced tea has been a favorite American beverage showing up at every family gathering, backyard barbecue, 4th of July picnic, and on every restaurant menu. In fact, each day, 120 million Americans reach for a frosty glass of iced tea. Fred Thompson shows us how easy it is to make a wide variety of iced teas right at home: from classics (Southern Style Ice Tea, Solar Tea) to infusions (Iced Mango Tea, Berry Spice Iced Tea), from spritzers (Green Tea Passion Fruit Spritzer) to offbeat and cocktail teas (Tea Smoothie, Beach Bourbon Slush). Thompson discusses basic methods for brewing tea, the types of teas and tea blends that are best iced, as well as a vast array of flavors and flavorful combinations that can be mixed with iced tea... It was the beginning of what Teddy Roosevelt called "the American century." The 1904 World's Fair was intended to be the biggest and best World's Fair ever. And it was. This engaging movie presents the fair as never before through a series of compelling and often funny stories, including: The first Olympic games on American soil, where competitors were openly administered drugs and marathon runners were chased off course by dogs; The first Ferris wheel, so large that a wedding was held in one of its compartments on horseback; A loin cloth wearing tribe that shocked and enthralled visitors by eating dogs; The infamous Geronimo, who sold visitors autographs and his hat--then replaced it with another one from a box hidden under the table.
