Reliable! -- Permanent DVD Recording with Memorex

Pros easy to use, dependable recording, spindle with cover
Cons do not come with jewel cases
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Memorex is a name I trust for recording media.
Another task has been added to my work roster. I am now officially in charge of burning product demo DVDs as they are needed. Since I've had great experience with Memorex DVDs, I decided to try these Memorex 16x DVD(plus)R Spindle (100 pack).

Description

These DVD discs come mounted on a spindle. The discs lay flat and are stacked vertically. To protect the discs, there is a clear dome-like cover that is easily removed by twisting it. Twist the cover one way, and it unlocks ... and twist it the other way to lock it in place over the discs. It's important to note that there are no jewel cases.

There are 100 DVD discs on the spindle. These particular discs are 16x, 4.7gb, 120 minutes. They are intended for PC or for home video recorders. These discs are silver in color and clearly labeled with the Memorex name and the DVD(plus)R symbol.

Atop the discs on the spindle is piece of paper that states these 16x DVD(plus)R discs may not be compatible with all recorders. Here is what the packaging says:

* 12x DVD(plus)R drives: recording limited to 12x.

* 8x DVD(plus)R drives: recording limited to 8x.

* 4x DVD(plus)R drives: recording limited to 4x or 2.4x unless firmware is updated.

* 2.4x DVD(plus)R drives: may produce writing and data retrieval failures unless the drives have been updated to be operational with 4x DVD(plus)R discs. Further updates may be required.

* 2.4x DVD(plus)RW drives: cannot record DVD(plus)R discs.

* Home DVD(plus)R recorders: may need firmware updates to record 16x DVD(plus)R discs at the standard recording speed of 1x.

Note: The firmware update requires downloading software from the internet. The software can be downloaded directly to a computer drive. For home video recorders, the firmware update needs to be saved onto a CD/DVD. The Memorex website offers additional instructions and suggestions regarding firmware upgrades.

My Experiences

Since I am recording more and more demo DVDs, it seemed a wise move to purchase towers of 100 discs. I have had great success with these Memorex DVDs. Every single DVD has burned well. I've been using them for quite a while, too, and have had no trouble with them.

I am using Nero software which came with the DVD burner I am using. The DVD playback quality is excellent. The picture is sharp; great resolution and color. The demo movies show lots of detail, which is captured well on these discs.

No one has complained that they can't view the DVDs, which is a good thing!

It's important, too, that these discs are recordable only. We want our demos to remain permanent. When I first started burning demo DVDs, I was given a package of RW discs. Granted RW discs are great if you want to re-record over existing material ... but we prefer the product demo discs to be a permanent record that hopefully customers will want to view (and perhaps keep the DVD to reference).

After I burn the discs, I apply labels to them. I print the labels on a color photocopier. They contain the company name, product identification, etc. The labels adhere well to the discs. We have had no trouble with the labels peeling from them, though I don't know how well the labels will stick over a long period of time. For us, this method works well.

Since the discs do not come with jewel cases, I have to purchase them separately. I keep alert for sales and manage to keep a supply of jewel cases on hand for very little money. I prefer the Slim Jewel Cases, and these discs fit well in them.

Purchasing

Staples recently had a sale on the 100-pack of these discs. So instead of paying the usual $59.98, I only paid $32.98.

Summary

I will continue to purchase these Memorex 16x DVD(plus)R discs. Since I'm burning so many DVDs, this 100-pack is a great way to save money. I'm not about to switch brands when Memorex has proven so dependable!

I hope you found this review useful.

Enjoy the day,
Dawn
