The competitors are constructed of mainly plastic. The metal surface of the light facing towards the inside of the soft box is highly reflective. Any light falling backwards is again reflected back into the soft box allowing for maximum output of the lights. Built in points allow for direct attachment of a soft box onto the Spiderlite itself. This not only cuts down the cost of the purchase of an adapter ring, but also provides the end user with fewer parts to carry or lose and quicker set up. The competition does not. The unit provide 3200 degrees Kelvin of constant light at 120 volts of power. Both the 500 and 1000-watt lamps used in the Westcott Spiderlite (same as used in the current Photoflex Starlite) provide great results in filling the soft box with a very even spread of light due to its unique design.

Apollo are constructed using an umbrella frame. No speed rings are needed, just use the umbrella receptacle on your light. Easy opening and closing means easy set-up and takedown. The square or rectangular shape allows you to scrim or control the light more readily. For direct diffusion, position the light facing the white diffuser panel. The light will have a bright center with a soft edge. The distance of the light to the diffuser panel will govern the brightness of the center of the light. For indirect diffusion, mount the Apollo with the light facing towards the back of the light modifier. With the light in this position, light will bounce off the silver metalized back of the unit and produce a more uniform, softer light.

We have both Collapsible Illuminator Backgrounds and sheet backgrounds. Both of these styles come in hand-painted muslin and Chroma-Key fabrics.We offer the following suggestions when you purchase the hand-painted muslin backgrounds. They are hand painted with an acrylic-based paint. They are not flame retardant and should not be machine-washed or dry-cleaned. We do suggest a light coating of a fabric protectant spray be applied before the first use to aid in keeping the backgrounds clean and also helps to aid in the paint from rubbing off onto your hands when you hang it (this is normal and will eventually diminish). Westcott now offers washable muslin sheet backgrounds in 2 sizes. The backgrounds are ideal for photographers to withstand applications that involve pets, sports or kids. The backgrounds are machine washable in a large washing machine. Tumble dry on medium setting and remove at once from dryer when dry.
