Winemaker Notes - Our Russian River Chardonnay is born from Wood Vineyard, located on River Road, and River Vineyard, located on East Side Road. The floral, mineral, and lime aromas of the River Vineyard are complemented by the peach and apricot aromas of the Wood Vineyard. Our winemaking philosophy remains the same since we introduced the Russian River Chardonnay in 1993: less intervention is better with chardonnay. Winemaking techniques including sur-lie aging, lees stirring, full malolactic fermentation, and the measured use of some new French oak are employed to bring you this delicious rendition from Sonoma's premier chardonnay appellation. Our Russian River Chardonnay spotlights the floral/lime quality of the fruit aromas and accents them with toasty, graham cracker sur-lie qualities. The mouthfeel is creamy and full but the natural acidity of the Russian River fruit carries this velvet textured package to a long, clean finish.

Wine maker notesThe vines from this Old Vine Russian River Valley vineyard are maintained with the emphasis of low yields and intense fruit. If you have had the past vintages of this MARA wine then you know the wines have been packed with flavors. The color is dense purple with the aromas of black raspberry, black cherry and chocolate. The wine is full bodied with lots of glycerin. As stated this wine is packed with all the flavor profiles that this Old Vine Russian River Valley vineyard hands out. The taste has a touch of vanilla, cedar and chocolate with a very nice back flavor of black licorice. A well structured wine that will benefit by a year or so in the bottle, but drinks extremely well right now. This ranch is right in the heart of the Russian River Valley and at harvest time goes through 3 microclimates to get all the intense flavors that I am looking for. As always a very small amount of cases are produced from an average of less than 1/2 ton per acre. Rated 90 - The 2006 Syrah Russian River is full-bodied, richly fruity, not terribly complex at the moment, but pure and nicely balanced. Proprietor Kerry Murphy and his winemaker, Andy Smith, are doing sensational work in the cool-climate areas of the Russian River. This has become one of my favorite tastings of the year, and not only are their Chardonnays and Pinot world-class, but they have extended their brilliance to both Viognier and Syrah. The cool, foggy Russian River Valley climate allows for slow ripening, enabling grapes to develop full flavor maturation over an extended time. The fruit for our 2007 blend was hand-harvested from select vineyards around the valley and crafted using traditional Burgundian techniques: fermentation in small, wooden, open-top vats; hand punch-downs; basket-pressing; and French oak barrel aging.Ripe raspberries lift from the glass and mingle with tempting aromas of strawberry- rhubarb tart and cola. Delicate notes of anise, cardamom and gingerbread spice lace the fruit to unfold a rich palate of black cherries supported by medium-fine-graine d tannins. The finish lingers with attractive, subtle, toasty undertones, fine acid and excellent balance. Pairs beautifully with barbecued leg of lamb or braised pork tenderloin.

Solidly in the firm, muscular, polished style of winemaker Holly Turner, this is a substantial effort that will need to be decanted if you are going to drink it anytime soon. Black cherry, cassis and blue plum are swathed in milk chocolate, but this is Cabernet with its sinews intact, showing streaks of herb, smoke and light pepper.

Our Francis Coppola reserve 2005 Chardonnay Russian River Valley exhibits the wonderful characteristics of the cool Russian River Valley where the grapes for this clean and vibrant wine are grown. crisp green apple happily mingles with citrus, pear, butterscotch, and banana flavors. A touch of clove and warm, toasty oak linger on the finish. Aged in a combination of new French oak and stainless steel, this 100% Chardonnay wine retains just the right amount of acidity. The fresh flavors of this wine make it compatible with a variety of dishes, including pan-seared halibut, chicken roasted with rosemary and lemon, and quattro formaggi pizza. alcohol: 13.5%; RS: dry; Aged: 50% in new French oak for 10 months, 50% in stainless steel.
