The last day of his visit he met Inessa at a bus station; the next day Michael didn't return to his division. Inessa woke that day to her image painted all around the city surrounding her house?on the road, on the walls of buildings and the walls of her apartment staircase. Michael had spent the night painting; he was arrested first by the city police, then handed over to the army MP's, but he was not punished. (Even military personnel can sympathize with true love!) One year later, Michael and Inessa returned to the same bus station. Michael hung a bouquet of flowers on the station sign to commemorate the place where they met; the beginning of their "at-first-glance" love story. In similar spontaneous fashion, the two began painting together. Several years after their marriage, Michael began a painting of their daughter for a project at school. However, their two-year old found the painting during his absence and painted her own version of the subject. Inessa, not wanting Michael to be upset, fixed the painting, packed it up and gave it to him to submit. Michael handed the painting over for review and was told it was his best work ever. He was surprised to see the "new" painting and immediately recognized his wife's hand. Since he can remember, he has had a special affinity for the sea; for the look, for the feel, for the sound of it. While growing up, he filled his grandmother's house with the ship models that he was constantly building. A lifelong artist, Keane started painting while still a child. He was given extensive instruction in oil painting and pastels. Soon, he was generating images of the sea and its ships. After eight years of study with his first painting instructor, he subsequently came under the tutelage of Marshall W. Joyce, a marine artist of some renown. During his years of study with Joyce, Keane was taught many things about the depiction of ships and sea that remain a valuable lesson to this day. While studying with Mr. Joyce, Keane was concurrently studying portrait and figure painting with a well-known New York portrait artist. This artist was well grounded in classical oil painting and his influence on Michael opened up whole new dimensions in Keane's marine painting. His work became more and more filled with luminosity and mood. His work grew so much, that his teacher asked him to become a partner and share studio space in a waterfront loft. Also, during this time period, Keane enrolled in a university and majored in visual design. Michael Keane - "Head to Head"To support himself during his many years of training, he worked at different occupations. First he became a boat builder at Boston Whaler. Later, he became interested in cars and became an expert mechanic. He built blueprinted racing engines and racing cars for himself and many others. After his protracted sojourn into the world of racing cars, he turned his attention again to shipbuilding. He spent almost seven years as a Marine Quality Assurance Inspector for General Dynamics. Keane used the income and knowledge garnered from the job to further his training in art and to design and build his own home. During his employ there, he also became quite proficient at reading and lofting ships plans. In 1976, Gorban graduated from the Kishinev Higher School for the Painting Arts in Moldavia and in 1982, he graduated from the Academy for Painting in the city of Lvov, majoring in graphics. Gorban received a grant in 1988-1990 from the Artist's Association of the Soviet Union, and he emigrated to Israel with his family in 1990. It is doubtful whether any other artist studied art for 21 years before displaying his paintings on the market. Michael Gorban completed his studies at age 30, with a record behind him of working closely with the finest of Russian artists, and using dozens of painting techniques. At age 30, Gorban received the honor of exhibiting his paintings at an international exhibition beside the likes of Salvador Dalí, Kandinsky, Chagall, and others, in the Hermitage museum in Leningrad. A third of Gorban's paintings hung in the Hermitage, one of the world's largest and most prestigious museums, for more than a year. Gorban managed to receive a 140 square meter studio in Moscow from the government. In the national album of Russian art history, Gorban is prominently featured with three of his paintings as one of the young artists to impact the 20th century between 1960 and 1980. "Painting is a sensual experience," claims Gorban today from his studio in Petach Tikva, near Tel Aviv. "I will not sign my name until I am completely satisfied." Concerning the subtle difference between an artist and a painter, he adds, "An artist can hear what the painting wants; a painter cannot. I never painted under duress or according to order. My success comes from people feeling the same satisfaction that I myself felt upon completing the painting." In 1990, Gorban decided to emigrate to Israel. The fact of his Jewishness had been repressed for years and was unknown to most people. Yet, feeling a special warmth for Israel, Gorban resolved to leave everything behind - the exhibitions, the recognition, the spacious Moscow studio, the summer cottage on the Black Sea - and make the move to Israel.
