Lighthouse Sculpture Blown-Glass
Ornament Series are intricate renditions of American Scenery with the design concept to 'capture and celebrate moments in time' within these handmade treasures. This
ornament characterizes the historic Montauk Point Light located on the easternmost point of Long Island, New York. The fourth oldest active
lighthouse in the U.S., Montauk Point Light is New York's first and oldest
lighthouse. The 110 ft. sandstone octagonal pyramidal white and brown tower with a black lantern was built in 1796. Being over 200 years old, this
lighthouse has witnessed much of American history. In 1839 the members of the commandeered slave ship Amistad, believing they were headed back to Africa, came ashore at Montauk to gather supplies (a result of the navigation by their former captors who used the Montauk
lighthouse as a guide) only to be arrested, and later freed after trial. During both the World Wars, the
lighthouse and adjacent Camp Hero were fortified with heavy artillery; the gun emplacements are still visible today.
