The 2004 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo is an explosive wine endowed with a layered, sumptuous expression of sweet dark fruit. Menthol, licorice and floral overtones develop in the glass, adding further complexity. This stunningly beautiful wine offers tremendous persistence yet it will require patience as its structural components are formidable. I tasted the Vigna del Sorbo several times, including alongside Felsina’s Riserva Rancia, consulting oenologist Franco Bernabei’s other top-notch Riserva. Both wines were exceptional, but the Vigna del Sorbo showed a touch more freshness typical of wines from Panzano. Simply put, 2004 is a phenomenal vintage for this wine. Vigna del Sorbo is made from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon which was grafted onto the rootstocks of the white varieties that were previously planted in the vineyard. Lower yield than the required under appellation laws, making for a more structured wine. A careful selection of the best unbroken grapes and soft pressing. Temperature controlled fermentation for 12 days and then malolactic fermentation in Slavonian oak barrels. More The Riserva Lucius was the result of the desire to accompany the classic Riserva with another Riserva Chianti Classico, with particular characteristics, made from the finest Sangiovese grapes combined with Cabernet and Merlot. The wine is named in honour of the co-founder of the Viticcio estate. The Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet grapes are vinified separately using selected yeasts that vary according to the grape variety. Delestage and pumping over are carried out according to the characteristics of the grapes for a period ( fermentation and maceration) ranging from 22 to 28 days. When the malolactic fermentation is complete, the wines are blended and transferred into 300-litre barrels made French and American oak, where it matures for about 18 months. The wine is then aged in horizontally- stored bottles for a further 6 months. The wine of the same name is produced exclusively in this charming and beautiful area. Grapes: Sangiovese 100%. Vinification: maceration of the skins of medium duration and fermentation under controlled temperature conditions. Aging: placed in oak barrels of various sizes and origins (Slavonian and French) for one year or more, the wine is then briefly transferred back into stainless steel tanks before bottling. Finishing: after bottling the wine is aged in our temperature controlled cellars for at least 10 months before release.
