Really fruity, with an abundance of raspberry, violet and berry character. Full-bodied, with a velvety tannin structure and a long berry and toasted oak aftertaste. The oak is a bit dominant, so give it time to mellow.--Georges de Latour Private Reserve vertical. Best after 2004. 12,000 cases made. (WS)

An atypically superficial effort from one of my favorite Pauillacs, the 2003 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is very good, but it does not stand up to some of the finest northern Medoc offerings. A deep ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by a moderately intense bouquet of black currants and underbrush. It hits the palate with good fruit and medium body, but tails off in the finish. It is an elegant, lighter-styled example of this generally high-class performer. It can be consumed over the next 10-12 years. Wine French Still Wine

Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac 1999 has a relatively deep color with a garnet tint shading slightly to orange. The nose is surprisingly rich, revealing a wide variety of ripe fruit – blackcurrant, blackberry, tropical fruit, fruit preserve – together with leather and humus, mocha, tobacco and cigar box, all mingled in a highly complex bouquet. Both round and very expressive on the palate, it displays supple, silky tannins integrated into elegant oak and a pleasant freshness that fills out on caramel and vanilla flavors with a slightly minty note. The nicely long and flavorsome finish is entirely typical of the vintage, seductive and with the pleasant disposition of an already well-rounded structure.

This estates staff believes that the 1996 Mouton-Rothschild is very complex. I agree that among the first-growths, this wine is showing surprising forwardness and complexity in its aromatics. It possesses an exuberant, flamboyant bouquet of roasted coffee, cassis, smoky oak, and soy sauce. The impressive 1996 Mouton-Rothschild offers impressive aromas of black currants, framboise, coffee, and new saddle leather. This full-bodied, ripe, rich, concentrated, superbly balanced wine is paradoxical in the sense that the aromatics suggest a far more evolved wine than the flavors reveal. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030. By the way, the 1996 blend consists of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc. Wine French Still Wine

The deep ruby/purple-hued 2003 d’Armailhac exhibits notes of Asian plum sauce interwoven with creme de cassis, licorice, and roasted herbs. With moderately high yet sweet tannin, an earthy character, and chewy, muscular, deep fruit as well as medium to full body, it should be drunk between 2008-2019. Wine French Still Wine

Sleek and racy, with a beautiful structure of very fine tannins and ripe fruit. There are minerals, currants and berries throughout, yet it's subtle and caressing. Lovely wine. I like this as much as the 2000. Best after 2007.(WS)

Pauillac, France Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste is our top pick for the money in the very good 2002 vintage. Parker 86, WS 88, Tanzer 90 Steven Tanzer's review: "Medium red-ruby. Nose dominated by black raspberry. Lively and solidly structured, with flavors of currant, minerals, mocha, leather and game. Finishes firmly tannic, with sneaky length. I found the tannins a bit tough a year ago, but today this distinctly firm wine mostly avoids dryness."

RP: The 2005 Mouton Rothschild will have to take a back seat to the prodigious 2006, but administrator Philippe Dalhuin deserves considerable credit for pushing Mouton to higher quality levels over recent years. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot, the dark purple-hued 2005 exhibits a restrained but promising nose of cedar, tobacco leaf, creme de cassis, and toasty oak. Full-bodied, tannic, and extremely backward, with the vintage’s tell-tale acidity, it appears to be even more closed in the bottle than it was from barrel. It does possess a long finish and multilayered mouthfeel. This is an undeniably outstanding, yet restrained, shy wine for a Mouton Rothschild. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040+

The unique encepagement and the twelve hectares of vines situated on the soils of St Julien endow the wines of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande with an exceptional personality compared with the other crus of the Pauillac appellation Complexity, elegance and longevity are the hallmarks of this race, they are found every year during the creation of the vintages The nose is distinguished by a bouquet of aromas, mixing blackcurrant and violet, vanilla and cinnamon In the palate, the tannins appear mature and melted, revealing a strong and affirmed structure, a surprising suppleness, perfect harmony and long persistency The wine is seductive when young without prejudicing its longevity James Laube of the Wine Spectator baptised Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, A First Class Second Cru, a most fitting tribute Wine FRENCH STILL WINE

A brilliant success for Clerc-Milon, this deep ruby/purple-hued blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc exhibits notes of espresso roast, chocolate, cedar, and copious amounts of black currant fruit. It is a medium to full-bodied, pure, rich, layered, intense effort built along the lines of the 1996, but with more forward fruit at present.

Backward, powerful, and extremely tannic, the dense purple-colored 2003 Mouton-Rothschild, a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, fashioned from yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare, with a finished alcohol of 12.9%, improves dramatically with aeration. With full-bodied, meaty, powerful, dry flavors as well as a huge finish, this high class wine should be at its finest between 2012-2040+. During its sojourn in barrel, it reminded me of a hypothetical blend of the 1982 and 1986 Moutons, but since bottling, it appears different, and even more tannic than those two vintages.95 points, The Wine Advocate Wine FRENCH STILL WINE

One of the most popular wines of Bordeaux seems to be going through a period where the style seems lighter, and there is less muscle and mass, but perhaps it’s just a temporary transition. Certainly there has been no truly profound Lynch Bages since the 2000, preceded by the 1996, 1990, and 1989. Showing better than it did from cask with some toasty oak, moderate quantities of creme de cassis fruit, lower acidity, and a hint of cedar in an evolved style, the medium to full-bodied 2003 Lynch Bages does not lack for tannin and structure but finishes surprisingly short for a top vintage in the northern Medoc. It is very good, but falls short of outstanding. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.After tasting the 2003 Lynch Bages on four separate occasions, I came away believing it is excellent, possibly outstanding, but not one of the greatest efforts from this estate. Made from yields of 43 hectoliters per hectare, this blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot exhibits a..

Yield of 35 hectoliters per hectare and a final blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc have produced a black/purple-colored 2005 boasting gorgeous intensity as well as sweet, classic creme de cassis notes interwoven with incense, camphor, and graphite. Powerful and full-bodied with abundant glycerin, high tannin, endearing freshness and sweetness, and a long, 45-second finish, this hefty (13.6% alcohol) Pauillac should be at its finest between 2012-2030+. An undeniable star of the vintage, Pichon-Baron’s 2004 boasts an inky/ruby/purple color to the rim as well as a big, sweet nose of melted licorice, chocolate, black currant jam, truffles, and charcoal embers. Soft tannin, full body, and abundant opulence and flesh are atypical for the vintage character, but this wine is loaded. Pure, ripe, and evolved, it should be at its finest between 2009-2022.
