She works in series, limiting herself only to her imagination, the medium of oils and the use of the palette knife, which she expertly wields as her sole application tool. Her subjects cover a large range of interests and ideas and may include landscapes as well as abstracts. Her concepts often encompass an explorative theme, taking notice of the accidental beauty found otherwise unnoticed things such as decaying buildings and weathered walls. Just as there are layered meanings in these weathered surfaces, Price uses the technique of layering pigment and texturing with oil paint, richly applied with the palette knife, allowing each layer's relationship to the others play an important role in the piece as a whole. She often uses found objects such as wire, old string, louvers and rusted objects to add to the illusion of time passing, further accentuating her perception. Maxine Price is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in art and is a resident of Wimberley, Texas for over a decade. She shows in the Gallery on the Square in Wimberley as well as several others in every major city in Texas. At a young age he was drawn to painting as it was something he could do to be away from the bitter cold temperatures of the outdoors. Haynes is largely self-taught with the exception of having the Anchorage library at his disposal only several blocks from his home. "I liked the books on DeKooning and the other abstract expressionist painters" he recalls. Haynes is also influenced heavily by the color theory of Johannes Itten. Itten's influence is obvious when viewing haynes' work in his application of color and in the transcendent optical effects created by his layering and juxtaposition of color. "Color is important in my work. It captures the essence of beauty and movement. Also I think of sounds when Im applying color. Sometimes I hear music when creating one of my pieces. Color also becomes a way to convey temperature...as the environment I live in becomes a constant fluctuation between being very cold and then getting warm. Living in Alaska there is very little day light....and so my work acts as an escape from the darkness. It brings color and light back to an otherwise dark environment. My work is a way of joining polar opposites."
